Society Islands

French Polynesia's main island chain,is the Society Islands chain,  which comprises of  the islands of Tahiti, Moorea, Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa, Bora Bora and Maupiti. All these islands have a high central mountain core with costal plain areas, white sand beaches and coral reefs.

Most of the major resort hotels are to be found in the Society islands.

Bora Bora

Thought by most people who visit it to be the most romantic place in the world, Bora Bora lies just a short 45 minutes flight northwest of Tahiti. The main Island is in the centre of a magnificent multi-coloured lagoon, surrounded by a necklace of coral reefs to explore.

Tahiti

Papeete, French Polynesia’s capital, is situated on the island of Tahiti and is home to the government offices and the centre of the island’s commerce. The country’s international airport, Faa’a, is located 6 miles from downtown Papeete.

Moorea

Often likened to James Michener’s mythical island ‘Bali Hai’, Moorea has some spectacular bays and mountains. The island’s volcanic peaks, reflected in the clear tranquil waters, have slopes that are covered with pineapple plantations while white sand beaches border crystalline lagoons.

Tahaa

Taha'a is the most mountainous of the Society islands so much so that there is not enough flat coastal plain land for an airport to be built so one has to fly to Raiatea than take a boat transfer.

Huahine

Comprising of two main islands, Huahine nui (big) and Huahine iti (little) which are joined by a narrow isthmus. Both are enclosed within a necklace of coral. The lagoon, bordered by white sand beaches, is rich with sealife and off-shore motu islets which lie within the barrier reef.

Raiatea

Raiatea

Raiatea is the second largest Island in French Polynesia, located 120 miles north-west of Tahiti. A partially paved road circles the island winding through fertile valleys and wide flatland, past farms and orchards. Inland tours reveal lush green valleys, pineapple and vanilla plantations.
